  • Tolu Minerals Secures New Copper-Gold Frontier with Ipi River Tenement Award

Tolu Minerals (ASX: TOK) has enhanced its Papua New Guinea exploration portfolio with the granting of the highly prospective Ipi River exploration project by Tolu Minerals Ltd, covering nearly 400 square kilometers of prime copper-gold territory in one of the world's most exciting yet underexplored mineral provinces.

Advanced Geophysics Reveals Five New Copper-Gold Targets

The company has deployed advanced exploration technologies, with preliminary interpretation of Airborne Magneto Telluric (MT) imagery identifying five previously unknown copper-gold targets requiring further exploration and drill testing.

This airborne geophysical survey provides electrical resistivity imaging of the top 1km to define geological targets and structures related to copper-gold mineralisation, along with valuable magnetic data to assist in the exploration process.

"I'm pleased to report the progression of our exploration strategy with the award of Exploration License EL 2780 consisting of highly prospective ground within the Ipi River tenement," said Iain Macpherson, MD & CEO of Tolu Minerals. "This award, coupled with our recent and historical exploration programmes at Ipi River, reinforces Tolu's position as an emerging, important explorer and operator in what is rapidly becoming one of the great gold/copper provinces of the world."

Impressive Historical Results Highlight Untapped Potential

The Ipi River exploration project by Tolu Minerals Ltd represents a historically under-explored Cu-Au-Mo system where previous rock sampling returned exceptional values of up to 10.10% copper and 167g/t gold. These grades underscore the significant potential of the region, similar to how Austin Metals identified new gold targets along strike from their high-grade discovery.

Historical drilling intersected promising mineralisation, including:

    Drill Hole Interval
    PDH001 367m at 0.17% Cu + 0.1g/t Au + 120 ppm Mo from 60m depth
    PDH001 28m at 0.25% Cu from 222m depth
    PDH002 3m at 0.64g/t Au from 150m depth

The project also includes a 6km x 6km "Bulls-eye" magnetic anomaly at Mt. Yule that occurs as an exceptionally high magnetic signature (>1,730nT dipolar variation), geologically related to a diorite/monzonite intrusive. The magnetic characteristics are reported to be similar to those of the Indonesian Grasberg monzodiorite and Ertsberg diorite Cu-Au-Ag mineral deposits.

Strategic Addition of Renowned Porphyry Expert to Advisory Board

Complementing this strategic acquisition, Tolu has appointed Douglas Kirwin, a porphyry and epithermal specialist, to its Advisory Board. This strategic appointment bears resemblance to how Vital Metals secured funding to advance their projects with expert guidance. Kirwin brings over 50 years of exploration experience, having played a role in numerous mineral discoveries, including the Hugo Dummett gold-copper deposit in Mongolia for which he received the PDAC Thayer Lindsley Award.

"With tenement EL2780 granted, we are delighted to be able to further investigate the multiple novel copper-gold targets identified from the Mobile MT airborne geophysical survey. Several stages of mineralisation and historic rock chip results with exceptional gold and copper grades are a reflection of the tenor of the Ipi River project," noted Chris Muller, Tolu's Executive Group Geologist.

Understanding Airborne MT: An Advanced Exploration Technology

What is Airborne Magneto Telluric technology?

Airborne Magneto Telluric (MT) technology represents an advanced method in mineral exploration. This geophysical method measures naturally occurring electromagnetic fields to create detailed three-dimensional resistivity models of the subsurface.

Unlike traditional geophysical methods, Airborne MT can penetrate to depths exceeding 1km while covering large areas efficiently. This makes it particularly valuable for identifying porphyry copper-gold systems, which often have distinctive electrical signatures due to their alteration patterns and mineralisation characteristics.

    How does the technology work?

The technology works by detecting variations in electrical conductivity in subsurface rocks. In porphyry systems:

    • Zones of increased conductivity often correlate with mineralisation and hydrothermal alteration
    • Resistive anomalies may indicate silicification or other alteration types that can cap or surround mineralised zones

Tolu's application of this technology at the Ipi River exploration project by Tolu Minerals Ltd has already identified both known targets and five previously unidentified anomalies that warrant further investigation.

Investment Potential: Multiple Targets for Significant Discovery

Tolu Minerals has positioned itself strategically in Papua New Guinea's emerging copper-gold province with a multi-faceted exploration approach. The company's tenement package now includes:

    1. The Ipi River porphyry system with proven high-grade copper-gold mineralisation
    2. The massive Mt. Yule "Bulls-eye" magnetic anomaly with characteristics reported to be similar to world-class deposits
    3. Five newly identified geophysical targets from the Airborne MT survey
    4. Historical epithermal gold targets with grades up to 167 g/t gold
    5. Additional peripheral gold anomalies that remain largely unexplored

Furthermore, the company's approach to securing promising mining districts mirrors Lithium Energy's recent acquisition of gold-copper opportunities in historic mining areas.

Exploration Targets Defined by Advanced Geophysics

The recently flown airborne MT survey has defined eight specific targets within the Ipi River exploration project by Tolu Minerals Ltd:

    Target Identifier Description
IPI01 Ipi River Porphyry Airborne MT conductivity anomaly at depth interpreted to be related to a copper enrichment blanket
IPI02 Magnetic Porphyry Discrete magnetic low and airborne MT resistivity anomaly associated with an upper leached zone
IPI03 Magnetic Intrusive Discrete magnetic intrusive anomaly for follow-up drill testing
IPI04 Magnetic Intrusive Discrete magnetic anomaly along the Yule Transfer Structure
IPI05 Magnetic Intrusive Discrete magnetic intrusive for follow-up sampling
IPI06 Mt. Yule "Bulls eye" Large (2.3km x 1.8km) intrusive related to a strong magnetic anomaly
IPI07 Korai Porphyry Target Discrete airborne deep-set MT conductivity anomaly within a structural intersection
IPI08 MT Porphyry Target Discrete airborne deep-set MT conductivity anomaly below a resistivity high

    Historical Exploration Context

The Ipi River porphyry stock is a multi-phase intrusive complex of late Miocene age intruding Late Cretaceous siltstone-mudstone and Mid to Late Miocene volcanics. Initial discovery and exploration of the area was conducted by CRA in 1970, with subsequent exploration programs carried out by multiple companies including Dampier/BHP, Indaba, Newmont, Emperor/TGM, Petromin and Eda/Kumul Minerals.

    Historical exploration included:

    • Geological mapping
    • Rock chip sampling
    • Stream sediment sampling
    • Ridge-spur and grid soil sampling
    • 3D-IP geophysical programs
    • Limited diamond drilling (6 scout holes totalling 1,818.70m)

The mineralisation is centred on an altered multiphase diorite-monzonite stock with surface dimensions of about 1.8km x 1.5km. There are associated calc-silicate skarns and late overprinting epithermal quartz/base metal-carbonate veins.
