    Fortuna Metals Accelerates Rutile Exploration in Malawi

    Fortuna Metals Limited (ASX: FUN) has launched an ambitious drilling program at its Malawian rutile projects, strategically positioned near one of the world's largest rutile deposits. The company has commenced hand auger drilling at its 100% owned Mkanda and Kampini Projects, covering a significant 658km² area that extends along the same geological formation hosting Sovereign Metals' world-class Kasiya deposit.

    The soil sampling program was designed with lines spaced at 1,000m intervals, with samples collected every 200m along these lines. In total, 202 samples were collected and analyzed for 53 elements using the UltraFine+ method.

    The UltraFine+â„¢ methodology has become an established approach to surface exploration, using proven geochemical methods to identify sensitive signals at surface. By concentrating metals in the ultrafine fraction, this technique gives stronger signals, generally well above instrumental detection limits, and increased signal-to-background ratios.

    This sampling technique is particularly valuable in areas with shallow to moderate cover, allowing geologists to detect mineralisation that might otherwise be obscured.

    Understanding Rutile Formation

    The high-grade rutile deposit at Kasiya is categorized as a residual placer or eluvial heavy mineral deposit. The enrichment of rutile into economic mineralisation results from weathering of the primary host rock and concentration of heavy minerals in place, rather than through high-energy transport and concentration seen in traditional placer deposits.

    The enrichment stage occurred during the Tertiary period when tropical weathering depleted the top 5 to 10 meters of physically and chemically mobile minerals. This process caused significant volume loss and concurrent concentration of heavy minerals including rutile.
