Sarytogan stated that the intercept was reported without any grade cuts, and that 93% of assays exceeded 500 ppm copper. In early-stage porphyry exploration, that level of consistency across the entire hole can be relevant because it points to a broad mineralised system rather than isolated narrow veins.
Two internal zones were reported above a 0.2% copper cut-off:
- 11.6 metres at 0.26% Cu and 407 ppm Mo from 33.8 metres
- 16.2 metres at 0.36% Cu, 0.12 ppm Au and 1.4 ppm Ag from 159.7 metres
The upper interval sits within an oxidised zone where visible copper minerals such as malachite, azurite, tenorite and cuprite were logged. The deeper interval is associated with pyrite and chalcopyrite, with local bornite along fractures and mineralisation linked to quartz veinlets in a weak stockwork pattern.
That distinction matters. Near-surface oxidised copper can provide visual confirmation of metal presence, while deeper sulphide mineralisation is generally more important for assessing whether a porphyry system may strengthen at depth.

Furthermore, for non-specialist readers, the practical point is straightforward: geologists do not assess drill results on grade alone. The surrounding rock changes, mineral types and vein patterns can all indicate whether the system is becoming more prospective with depth.
What Is Stockwork and Why Does It Matter?
Stockwork refers to a dense network of small intersecting veins. In copper porphyry systems, stockwork veinlets carrying sulphides can be an important sign that copper-bearing fluids moved through the rock over a large area. The Result Builds on Earlier Exploration at Baynazar
The Ilksan drilling result was not a stand-alone surprise. In the announcement, Sarytogan outlined several earlier exploration steps that had already pointed toward porphyry potential at Baynazar. These included historical Soviet drilling, modern geophysics, soil sampling, trenching and shallow percussion drilling.

One of the more relevant points is that DDH-IL26002 was collared 10 metres south of historical hole C-16, allowing Sarytogan to compare modern drilling against Soviet-era records whose reliability had not previously been confirmed.
In addition, the company noted that the geochemical zoning seen at Ilksan, with copper in the centre and lead-zinc halos on the outside, is consistent with a porphyry system model.
What the Three-Hole Program Is Testing
The current diamond drilling program at Ilksan comprises three holes designed to test the central copper anomaly from different positions and depths.

According to the ASX update, DDH-IL26003 was drilled 150 metres further north and terminated directly below DDH-IL26001A when the 1,000 metre program budget was exhausted. The holes are consequently being used as a cross-sectional test of the system, with spacing of around 150 metres at collar and convergence to 50 to 100 metres apart at depth.
If the remaining holes show similar or stronger mineralisation deeper in the system, the company may be able to build a more coherent geological model around the size, continuity and orientation of the mineralised body. The next catalyst is therefore clear: Sarytogan said results from DDH-IL26001A and DDH-IL26003 are expected within the current quarter, likely by September 2026.
Kazakhstan Remains Central to the Baynazar Investment Case
In the announcement, Sarytogan positioned Baynazar within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, a large geological province extending through Kazakhstan, northern China and Mongolia. The Baynazar tenure covers the western contact zone of the Baynazar Caldera and two southern satellite calderas.
The company noted that the Almaly copper-porphyry mine lies on the opposite margin of the same caldera. While this does not imply Ilksan will match that outcome, it does provide geological context that the district is prospective for porphyry-style copper systems.
Kazakhstan itself is presented as an established mining jurisdiction with low-cost copper operations. Sarytogan cited an October 2024 infographic from Mining Visuals stating that four of the five lowest-cost copper mines in the world are located there, supported by lower power, diesel and skilled labour costs.
Baynazar is also located just 25 kilometres south-west of Sarytogan's flagship graphite deposit. For investors, that proximity may matter because it allows the company to utilise an existing in-country team and established local operating experience across both projects.
Sarytogan Remains Primarily a Graphite Developer
Although the current announcement focused on copper exploration, Sarytogan's main asset remains the 100%-owned Sarytogan Graphite Deposit in central Kazakhstan. The company's reported Mineral Resource Estimate stands at 225 million tonnes at 29.2% Total Graphitic Carbon (TGC) for 66 million tonnes of contained graphite.

Sarytogan has also reported an Ore Reserve of 8.6 million tonnes at 30.0% TGC and completed a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in August 2024.

On processing, the company stated it has produced flotation concentrates above 90% TGC and upgraded concentrate to 99.9992% carbon through thermal purification without chemical pre-treatment. It is targeting three graphite product streams:

- Spherical Purified Graphite (USPG and CSPG)
