Southern Hemisphere Mining Drills into Scale as Llahuin Returns Broad Copper Intercepts in Chile
Southern Hemisphere Mining Limited (ASX: SUH) has reported broad copper-gold-molybdenum intersections from ongoing diamond drilling at its 100%-owned Llahuin Project in Chile, with results that management says support a large, vertically extensive copper porphyry system. The latest program returned standout assays including 241m at 0.42% CuEq from 18m, 154m at 0.66% CuEq from surface, and 156m at 0.43% CuEq from 2m, while a resource upgrade remains in progress.
For investors, the update matters because it adds weight to two important parts of the Llahuin story. First, it points to strong continuity beneath earlier reverse circulation drilling. Second, according to the company, drilling at Ferro South appears to have identified a new porphyry centre, with deeper holes still aiming toward a potentially stronger mineralised core.

What Did the Drilling Return?
According to the ASX announcement dated 4 August 2026, Southern Hemisphere completed nine diamond tails on previously drilled RC holes for a total of 2,251m of HQ3 drill core across the project.
The reported headline intercepts are set out below.
| Hole ID | Prospect | From (m) | To (m) | Width (m) | CuEq % | Cu % | Au (g/t) | Mo % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24LHRD065 | Cerro | 0 | 154 | 154 | 0.65 | 0.24 | 0.31 | 0.006 |
| 24LHRD067 | Ferro South | 18 | 259 | 241 | 0.42 | 0.29 | 0.11 | 0.0013 |
| 24LHRD055 | Cerro | 2 | 158 | 156 | 0.43 | 0.17 | 0.15 | 0.014 |
| 24LHRD064 | Cerro | 0 | 141 | 141 | 0.35 | 0.18 | 0.12 | 0.003 |
| RDLLA134 | Ferro | 180 | 215 | 35 | 0.63 | 0.34 | 0.18 | 0.011 |
Several intervals also included stronger internal zones:
- 24LHRD067 included 143m at 0.51% CuEq from 36m
- 24LHRD055 included 106m at 0.51% CuEq from 2m
- 24LHRD065 returned 154m at 0.66% CuEq from surface, which the company said demonstrates deeper potential at better than current resource grade in the Cerro area
These are long intersections rather than narrow high-grade veins. That distinction is important in porphyry systems, where economics are often linked to bulk tonnage and continuity rather than isolated high-grade shoots.
"The results from this program are encouraging and continue our work unlocking the scale potential of the Llahuin copper system. Results such as: 154m @ 0.66% CuEq from surface in 24LHRD065 speak for themselves this early in our advancement to deeper drilling," said Mark Stowell, Chairman of Southern Hemisphere Mining.
Why Porphyry Copper Systems Matter to Investors
A porphyry copper deposit is a large body of rock containing widely spread copper mineralisation, often with gold and molybdenum as by-products. These deposits usually contain lower grades than vein-style mines, but they can hold very large tonnages.
This is why investors often focus on a few core questions when assessing a copper porphyry story:
- Does mineralisation continue at depth?
- Is it laterally extensive across multiple zones?
- Are grades consistent enough across large widths to support scale?
- Is there evidence of a stronger central zone that could improve the overall project profile?
The current Llahuin drilling is relevant because it appears to address several of these points. The company reported that mineralisation in the new diamond drilling sits well below previously drilled RC sections, suggesting continuity at depth. Furthermore, the broad intervals at Cerro and Ferro South support the interpretation of a sizeable mineralised system rather than a small isolated zone.
A Simple Guide to Key Technical Terms
| Term | Meaning in Plain English |
|---|---|
| CuEq | Copper equivalent, a single grade figure that combines copper, gold and molybdenum values using a price-based formula |
| Porphyry | A large style of copper deposit where mineralisation is spread through a big volume of rock |
| Diamond tail | A diamond-drilled extension added below an earlier RC hole to test deeper ground |
| HQ3 core | A standard drill core size used to recover solid rock samples for logging and assay |
| Feeder zone | The deeper part of a porphyry system that can carry stronger mineralisation |
| JORC resource | A mineral resource reported under the Australasian JORC Code, which sets standards for public disclosure |
The copper equivalent figures in the company's resource estimate use metal prices of US$3.50/lb copper, US$3,000/oz gold, and US$20/lb molybdenum. The formula is intended as a comparative measure of multi-element mineralisation, rather than a statement of project economics.
Existing Llahuin Resource Provides the Starting Point
The latest drilling is being assessed against an already substantial resource base at Llahuin. As previously announced on 30 July 2025, the project hosts a JORC 2012-compliant resource of 218.2 million tonnes at 0.38% CuEq, including measured, indicated and inferred categories.
| Zone | Measured + Indicated (Mt) | CuEq % | Inferred (Mt) | CuEq % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central Porphyry | 101.1 | 0.41 | 24.5 | 0.31 |
| Cerro | 46.8 | 0.39 | 13.7 | 0.32 |
| Ferro | 26.2 | 0.32 | 5.9 | 0.32 |
| Total | 174.1 | 0.39 | 44.1 | 0.31 |
That gives a total combined resource of 218.2Mt at 0.38% CuEq above a 0.22% CuEq cut-off.
The current drilling matters because some new results compare favourably with these existing grades. The strongest example is 24LHRD065 at Cerro, where the reported 0.65% CuEq over 154m from surface sits well above the current Cerro resource grade of 0.39% CuEq.
This does not automatically mean the whole resource will re-rate to higher grade. However, it does suggest that deeper drilling may be intersecting better quality mineralisation in parts of the system, which could become relevant in the next resource update.
Ferro South Emerges as a Key Growth Area
The most technically important element of the update may be the company's interpretation of Ferro South. Southern Hemisphere stated that drilling results there demonstrate a new porphyry centre at Llahuin, and that more work is required to define the scale of this discovery.
That language is material because a new porphyry centre could add a fresh source of tonnage and potentially improve the broader project growth profile. It also shifts attention beyond simply extending the known Ferro resource.
The company reported several features that support this interpretation:
- Mineralisation is present below earlier RC sections
- Veining and sulphide intensity suggest drilling may be moving toward a more strongly mineralised part of the system
- The feeder zone has not yet been intersected
- Further deep drilling is being designed to test that target
In porphyry exploration, the feeder zone is often watched closely because it can represent the part of the system where mineralising fluids were most concentrated. If that zone is present and carries stronger grades, it can materially influence future resource quality. At this stage, however, that remains a target for future drilling rather than a confirmed result.
"Mineralisation remains open at depth and supports our view that the Cerro-Ferro trend hosts a substantial copper porphyry system with significant expansion potential," Stowell said in the update.
Cerro Drilling Adds Depth Potential
While Ferro South may carry the more obvious exploration interest, the Cerro zone also delivered an important outcome in this drilling programme. The company said holes at Cerro extended mineralisation beneath previous RC drilling, with 24LHRD065 highlighted as evidence of deeper potential at much better than resource grade.
That hole returned:
- 154m at 0.65% CuEq from surface
- Including 0.24% copper
- Plus 0.31 g/t gold
- And 0.006% molybdenum
For investors, from-surface mineralisation can be relevant because it may support simpler mine development scenarios if economic studies later justify production. Broad mineralisation beginning at surface generally attracts market attention, as it may reduce stripping or access complexity in a future scenario.
The Cerro results also help reinforce a wider point. Llahuin is not being defined by a single isolated drill hit. Instead, multiple zones across the project are returning long intervals that fit the company's existing geological model.
What Comes Next from Here?
The ASX update outlined a clear set of near-term steps for the project.
| Catalyst | Status / Detail |
|---|---|
| Resource upgrade | In progress, to be reported once final drill results are received |
| Further Ferro South drilling | Planned to test for the feeder zone |
| Additional Cerro interpretation | Ongoing as deeper drilling extends known mineralisation |
| Progressive assay updates | To be released as results and analysis are completed |
The timing of the resource update will matter. A revised mineral resource estimate may show whether the latest drilling converts into additional tonnes, improved confidence categories, better grades in some areas, or a combination of all three.
The company also referenced its previously reported exploration target of 260Mt to 340Mt, first announced on 30 July 2025. Exploration targets are not mineral resources, but they do provide context for the scale management believes could be geologically plausible based on current information.
The Investment Case in Context
Southern Hemisphere's latest drilling update sharpens the core investment case around Llahuin. In addition to the strong drilling results, several other factors are worth considering.
The first element is scale. The project already hosts 218.2Mt at 0.38% CuEq, and the current programme appears to be extending mineralisation at depth across more than one zone.
The second element is growth potential. According to the company, Ferro South may represent a new porphyry centre, while Cerro has returned above-resource-grade results from deeper drilling. Both points could be relevant to the pending resource upgrade.
The third element is jurisdiction and ownership. Llahuin is located in Chile, the world's leading copper-producing country, and the project is reported to be 100% owned by Southern Hemisphere. The company also stated there are no known impediments to obtaining a licence to operate in the area.
The fourth element is valuation, as framed by management. Stowell said the company's market capitalisation of around $22 million is, in his view, well below what the scale of the resource and current drilling progress may justify. That is a management opinion rather than an independent valuation, but it indicates how the board is positioning the story to the market.
Finally, the register structure may also interest some investors. The chairman said Southern Hemisphere is tightly held, with institutional and management ownership described as supportive.

Why Llahuin Is Worth Watching
This drilling update does not transform Llahuin into a development project overnight, and the company has not published economic studies in this release. What it does appear to do, however, is strengthen the geological case that a sizeable copper system is being defined across multiple zones.
Broad intersections at Cerro and Ferro South, evidence of depth continuity, and the identification of what the company describes as a new porphyry centre all add to the significance of the pending resource upgrade. If further drilling also reaches the targeted feeder zone at Ferro South, that could become an important technical milestone.
For ASX copper investors, the next markers are clear. They include remaining assays from the current programme, the updated resource estimate, and any deeper drilling results that test for stronger mineralisation below the current footprint. At this stage, the latest Llahuin drill results suggest Southern Hemisphere is adding definition to a large copper-gold-molybdenum system that remains open to further growth.
