  • Chilwa Minerals Uncovers High-Grade Mineral Sands at Mpyupyu Dunes

Impressive Sonic Drilling Results Highlight Exceptional Heavy Mineral Concentrations

Chilwa Minerals Limited (ASX: CHW) has announced outstanding results from its second batch of assays at the Mpyupyu Dune deposit, confirming high-grade heavy mineral sand (HMS) concentrations that significantly reinforce the deposit's economic potential. The results come from 127 sonic drillholes totalling 947 metres and continue to demonstrate the exceptional quality of this critical minerals project in southern Malawi. Furthermore, this discovery follows a pattern of rare earth discovery in carbonatite that has previously excited investors in the region.

    Remarkable Heavy Mineral Concentrations

The latest assay results reveal impressive Total Heavy Mineral (THM) grades across multiple drill intersections, including:

    • 4.40m @ 24.04% THM from surface, including 1.90m @ 38.42% THM
    • 3.25m @ 21.46% THM from surface, including 1.45m @ 32.71% THM
    • 5.45m @ 17.83% THM from surface, including 3.45m @ 25.72% THM
    • 4.16m @ 17.74% THM from surface
    • 5.95m @ 15.76% THM from surface, including 3m @ 23.09% THM

These high-grade results are particularly significant as they consistently begin at surface, requiring minimal overburden removal in any future mining scenario. The drilling reinforces Chilwa's belief that mineralisation at Mpyupyu is concentrated in two sub-parallel lobate strandlines striking approximately east-west.

Strategic Deposit Within a Larger Resource

The Mpyupyu deposit currently has an Inferred Mineral Resource estimate of 19.9Mt @ 4.2% THM, with the higher-grade Dune portion comprising 3.5Mt @ 7.1% THM, while the Mpyupyu Flats portion makes up 16.4Mt @ 3.6% THM. The latest drilling results suggest potential for resource upgrades in both grade and classification confidence.

"These impressive results from the second batch of Mpyupyu confirm the Company's belief that this deposit holds high grades within the dune area. We look forward to receiving results from the Mpyupyu flats area over the coming weeks."

    – Cadell Buss, Managing Director

    Understanding Heavy Mineral Sands

Heavy mineral sands represent an increasingly important resource category as they contain critical materials essential for modern manufacturing and technology. The term "heavy minerals" refers to minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.9, which causes them to separate naturally from lighter minerals during sedimentary processes.

In deposits like Mpyupyu, wave action and natural hydraulic processes have concentrated these heavy minerals over time in ancient beach and dune systems. The primary valuable minerals typically include ilmenite, rutile (titanium minerals), and zircon, which have applications in pigments, ceramics, electronics, and aerospace industries.

The exceptionally high THM grades at Mpyupyu (with numerous intersections above 20%) suggest a highly efficient natural concentration process has occurred, potentially leading to economic extraction advantages.

    Accelerating Project Timeline

A key development highlighted in the announcement is the improved assay turnaround time with the company's new laboratory partner, Light Deep Earth (Pty) Ltd in South Africa. This acceleration of analytical results is helping Chilwa maintain momentum across multiple fronts:

    1. Mposa deposit mineral resource estimate expected within weeks
    2. Mpyupyu resource estimate upgrade targeted for the end of the current quarter
    3. Additional deposits at Bimbi and other central deposits advancing through the resource definition pipeline

The company is systematically drilling and evaluating 10 different HMS deposits identified within its Chilwa Critical Minerals Project, with both sonic drill rigs now returned to Mpyupyu to commence drilling the Flats area.

    Advancing Toward Economic Studies

Chilwa has commenced mineral resource estimates for its Central Zone deposits (Mposa, Mpyupyu, Bimbi, and Namasalima), with the Mposa estimate expected imminently. The company has designed its drilling programs to achieve high confidence levels that can support mining scenarios in an upcoming Scoping Study planned for 2025.

The company has engaged well-regarded consultant TZ Minerals International (TZMI) to manage metallurgical testwork and flowsheet studies, with results expected in the September quarter of this year. TZMI previously authored a 2015 Scoping Study for deposits on the western shore of Lake Chilwa.

    Multi-Commodity Potential

While the heavy mineral sands represent the company's current focus, Chilwa is also advancing its rare earth element (REE) exploration program. The company has identified 47 carbonatite targets, with soil sampling completed on 30 targets to date. Drilling continues at the first target in Mposa, with analytical results expected in the coming weeks. In addition, these activities complement high-grade REE critical minerals exploration efforts being conducted by other companies in the broader region.

Why Investors Should Watch Chilwa Minerals

Chilwa Minerals high-grade results present a compelling investment case for several key reasons:

    1. High-grade resource potential: The consistent high-grade heavy mineral intersections at Mpyupyu (many exceeding 20% THM) suggest potential for a premium mineral sands operation.

    2. Critical minerals exposure: The project hosts minerals essential for manufacturing, technology, and industrial applications with growing demand profiles.

    3. Methodical development approach: The company is systematically exploring and defining multiple deposits while advancing toward economic studies.

    4. Dual commodity opportunity: Beyond heavy mineral sands, the company's rare earth element targets provide additional upside potential.

    5. Near-term catalysts: With multiple mineral resource estimates expected in the coming weeks and months, plus metallurgical results and scoping study work, investors can anticipate regular news flow.

Chilwa Minerals high-grade results at the Mpyupyu Dune highlight the company's strategic approach to advancing multiple critical mineral targets. These high-grade results position it well to capitalise on growing global demand for these essential materials, with the Mpyupyu Dune results highlighting the exceptional grade potential of its flagship project. However, unlike some other exploration projects that focus on significant gold discovery or strategic expansion in Finland, Chilwa's focus remains firmly on critical minerals that support technological advancement.
