  • Gold Rush: Lightning Minerals Preps for Mt Turner Drilling Campaign

Lightning Minerals (ASX:L1M) has completed a site visit to its Mt Turner Gold Project in Queensland, confirming multiple high-potential drill targets ahead of a planned 1,000-meter drilling program. The visit represents a significant milestone as the company prepares to test the substantial gold potential along the 14km Drummer Fault.

Targeting Proven Gold Areas with Exciting Historical Results

The company's technical team, led by Managing Director Alex Biggs, has identified several priority drilling locations that will focus on demonstrating further gold potential beneath existing pits and along the significant 14km Drummer Fault structure.

Previous mining and drilling at Mt Turner has already demonstrated the project's near-surface, high-grade potential, with historical results including:

    • 16m @ 3.56 g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D04)
    • 16.0m @ 3.60g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D03)
    • 12m @ 6.5g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D03)
    • 7m @ 1.7g/t Au and 43g/t Ag from 64m (Hole 21ISMDWRC001)
    • 3m @ 5.1g/t Au and 51g/t Ag from 83m (Hole DH2)

"We have had a great visit to Mt Turner this week," said Lightning Minerals' Managing Director Alex Biggs. "Getting on the ground has made us realise how many targets there are over such a broad area. This region is highly prospective and relatively under-explored by modern techniques."

    Soil Sampling Program Already Underway

In parallel with preparations for drilling, Lightning Minerals has commenced a soil sampling program to test for coherent linear gold anomalies between the known Drummer and Rocky Reward open pits, covering a strike length of 12.5 km.

The program will collect samples along the Drummer Hill Fault System on a fence line spacing of 100m, with samples collected every 20m along the fence lines. This systematic approach will help identify additional zones of interest beyond the planned drilling areas.

Understanding the Drummer Fault: A Key Geological Structure

The Drummer Fault is a 14km east-west structure that's clearly visible on LiDAR and satellite imagery. This major geological feature has been the focus of historical mining activities, with several shallow oxide pits mined for gold in the 1990s.

What makes this fault particularly interesting is the presence of northeast-trending structures that intersect it at various locations. These intersections potentially create conditions for higher-grade mineralisation in yet undiscovered splays off the main fault.

The geological setting at Mt Turner is typical of orogenic and epithermal gold deposits, as well as potential porphyry copper-gold systems. The project lies in the central portion of the Georgetown Inlier, which consists of variably metamorphosed and deformed sedimentary and volcanic rocks intruded by various generations of granites.

    Imminent Drilling Plans

Lightning Minerals has designed an initial drill program to demonstrate:

    1. Potential extensions to known mineralisation
    2. Orientation of gold-bearing structures
    3. Style of mineralisation beneath existing pits

The company plans to begin drilling immediately following its upcoming EGM in the coming weeks, with at least 1,000 meters of drilling planned in the first phase.

    Key drilling targets include:

    • Rocky Reward
    • Drummer Girl
    • Drummer Boy
    • Drummer West
    • Drummer East

These historic pits were excavated to a maximum depth of just 20 meters in the 1990s, targeting high-grade oxide material. However, there has been very little exploration at depths below 100 meters, presenting significant opportunity for the Lightning Minerals Mt Turner drilling campaign.

Why Mt Turner Presents a Compelling Investment Case

The Mt Turner Gold Project represents a significant opportunity for Lightning Minerals and its shareholders for several reasons:

    1. Proven gold mineralisation: Historical drilling and mining confirm high-grade gold is present in the system.

    2. Extensive strike length: The 14km Drummer Fault provides numerous targets along its length.

    3. Shallow historical mining: Previous mining only reached 20m depth, leaving potential mineralisation at depth untested.

    4. Multiple targets: Beyond the planned drilling areas, numerous additional target areas have been identified.

    5. Exposure to strong markets: The project provides exposure to both gold and copper markets at a time when both commodities are showing strength.

"Having a brownfields project with the number of targets that we see at Mt Turner is a very exciting opportunity for the company and what we see as a strong near-term catalyst. Having exposure to the strong gold and copper markets at present is a very positive step for the company and one we see potentially provides our shareholders with a rewarding and exciting opportunity in the coming months and beyond."

Gold Exploration Fundamentals: What Makes a Good Target?

Gold exploration is a methodical process that combines geological understanding, historical data analysis, and modern exploration techniques. The Lightning Minerals Mt Turner drilling campaign targets several key indicators that make for promising gold exploration:

    Structural Controls

Gold deposits often form along major geological structures like faults, which act as pathways for mineralising fluids. The 14km Drummer Fault at Mt Turner represents exactly this type of major structure, with its extensive length providing multiple points for potential gold concentration.

    Historical Production

Areas with proven historical gold production often remain underexplored at depth or along strike. The multiple shallow oxide pits at Mt Turner, which were mined to only 20m depth, suggest the potential for deeper mineralisation that remains untested.

    Intersection Zones

Where multiple geological structures intersect, conditions are often favourable for higher-grade mineralisation. At Mt Turner, the northeast-trending structures that cross the main Drummer Fault create these potential high-grade zones.

    Geochemical Anomalies

Soil sampling programs like the one Lightning Minerals is currently conducting can identify areas with elevated gold values at surface, potentially indicating mineralisation below. These geochemical signatures help refine drill targets and increase the likelihood of exploration success.

    What Investors Should Watch For

With the Lightning Minerals Mt Turner drilling campaign set to commence in the coming weeks following the company's EGM, investors should watch for:

    1. Results from the ongoing soil sampling program
    2. Commencement of the phase one drilling campaign
    3. Initial drilling results, particularly from beneath the historical open pits
    4. Any expansion of the drilling program based on early results

The Mt Turner Gold Project represents a significant opportunity for Lightning Minerals to quickly establish a resource base in a historically productive gold region. With strong gold prices and a clear exploration strategy, the company is well-positioned to generate value for shareholders in the near term. Furthermore, recent high-grade results at similar projects across Australia demonstrate the potential upside for well-executed gold exploration programs.
