  • Lightning Minerals Set to Begin Drilling High-Priority Gold Targets at Mt Turner

Lightning Minerals (ASX: L1M) is gearing up for its inaugural drilling program at the recently acquired Mt Turner Gold Project in Queensland, with drilling contractors now appointed and work scheduled to begin in mid-September. This strategic move follows positive shareholder approval of the Lotus Minerals acquisition at the company's recent Extraordinary General Meeting.

Diamond Drilling Program Targets Historic Mining Areas

GeoDrill Australia has been appointed to conduct up to 1,300 meters of diamond drilling across five high-priority gold targets at the Mt Turner Gold Project. The program will commence the week of September 15, 2025, focusing on potential extensions of mineralization below historic open pits that were mined for high-grade gold in the 1980s and 1990s.

Previous mining and exploration at Mt Turner has demonstrated significant near-surface, high-grade gold potential, with historical drill results including:

    • 16m @ 3.56 g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D04)
    • 16.0m @ 3.60g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D03)
    • 12m @ 6.5g/t Au (Hole UMDT95_D03)
    • 7m @ 1.7g/t Au and 43g/t Ag from 64m (Hole 21ISMDWRC001)
    • 3m @ 5.1g/t Au and 51g/t Ag from 83m (Hole DH2)

"We're looking forward to starting our first drill campaign at Mt Turner. There are multiple targets which the team has a high degree of confidence in. Combined with other ongoing works at Mt Turner including soil sampling and ground reconnaissance works, we are developing multiple drill targets across both gold and copper targets which sets us up for a busy and exciting period ahead," said Lightning Minerals' Managing Director Alex Biggs.

Comprehensive Exploration Strategy Along Drummer Hill Fault

The inaugural drilling program will target potential continuations of mineralization at depths up to 150 meters below existing open pits where previous drilling was minimal or non-existent. The program will also test lateral extensions along the prospective Drummer Fault.

Complementing the drilling, a soil sampling program is nearing completion along 9km of the Drummer Hill Fault System. This work is designed to test for coherent linear gold anomalies and develop further targets along the 14km fault structure. Samples will be analyzed at ALS Global Laboratory in Townsville, with results expected within 4-6 weeks.

    Understanding the Drummer Fault Potential

The Mt Turner Gold Project is located 15km northwest of Georgetown in North Queensland and consists of two granted Exploration Permits (EPM 27170 and EPM 27525). The project is centered on the Drummer Fault structure, a 14km east-west structure that has historically yielded high-grade gold from several shallow oxide pits mined in the 1990s.

The company's strategy involves identifying areas where northeast-trending structures intersect the Drummer Fault, potentially creating higher-grade mineralization zones. The current exploration program aims to demonstrate continuity of mineralization along the fault's strike.

What is a Fault System and Why It Matters to Gold Investors

A fault system represents fractures in the Earth's crust where blocks of rock have moved relative to each other. These geological structures are critical for gold exploration because they often serve as conduits for mineral-rich fluids that can precipitate gold and other valuable metals.

The Drummer Hill Fault System at Mt Turner is particularly significant because fault intersections (where different fault lines meet) can create dilation zones with enhanced permeability—ideal conditions for concentrated gold deposition. For investors, identifying projects with well-defined fault systems in historically productive gold regions can indicate higher probability of exploration success.

    Future Plans and Timeline

Lightning Minerals has outlined a clear path forward for the Mt Turner Gold Project:

    1. Diamond drilling (1,300m) to commence mid-September 2025
    2. Completion of soil sampling along the Drummer Hill Fault within the next week
    3. Laboratory analysis of soil samples with results expected in 4-6 weeks
    4. Development of additional drill targets based on soil sampling results
    5. Continued geological reconnaissance and target generation

Simultaneously, the company continues work at its Esperança project in Brazil, with samples now at the SGS laboratory in Belo Horizonte and results expected within 4-6 weeks.

Investment Thesis: Why Mt Turner Presents an Opportunity

The Mt Turner Gold Project offers investors exposure to a brownfield gold exploration opportunity with several compelling attributes:

    1. Historical Production: The project includes multiple previously mined open pits that targeted high-grade oxide gold, suggesting proven mineralization.

    2. Limited Modern Exploration: Despite historical mining success, exploration below 100m depth has been minimal, presenting significant opportunity for resource expansion.

    3. Extensive Structural Target: The 14km Drummer Fault provides a substantial exploration corridor with multiple target areas.

    4. Near-Surface High Grades: Previous drilling has demonstrated the potential for economically significant gold grades at relatively shallow depths.

    5. Comprehensive Exploration Approach: Lightning Minerals is employing a methodical approach combining drilling, soil sampling, and structural analysis to systematically evaluate the project's potential.

Why Investors Should Follow Lightning Minerals

Lightning Minerals is strategically positioning itself for growth through a balanced portfolio of assets that includes the Mt Turner Gold Project in Australia alongside lithium projects in Brazil, Western Australia, and Canada. This diversified approach provides shareholders with exposure to both precious metals and critical minerals markets.

The company's upcoming drilling program at Mt Turner represents a significant catalyst that could demonstrate the project's potential for hosting an economic gold resource. With multiple targets identified along the 14km Drummer Fault and a comprehensive exploration strategy in place, Lightning Minerals is well-positioned to generate substantial news flow over the coming months.

For investors seeking exposure to gold exploration with near-term drilling catalysts, Lightning Minerals offers a compelling opportunity with the technical expertise and financial capacity to advance its projects systematically. In the broader mining sector, other companies like Great Boulder Resources have also announced new gold targets at their projects, while Mithril Silver and Gold recently hit exceptional high-grade gold and silver at their La Soledad project.

Furthermore, Hammer Metals has unveiled two major gold-copper discoveries in North Queensland, highlighting the region's prospectivity. Meanwhile, Auric Mining's record profit from gold production demonstrates the potential upside for successful explorers. Companies like Iceni Gold are also implementing strategic exploration approaches in Western Australia, similar to Lightning Minerals' methodical strategy at the Mt Turner Gold Project.
