Talisman Mining Drills Into a Potentially Large-Scale Gold System at Sheepyard

Talisman Mining (ASX: TLM) has reported new assay results from a 40-hole, 1,657-metre aircore drilling program at the Sheepyard Prospect within its 100%-owned Walkers Hill Gold Project in New South Wales. The program continued to intersect broad zones of shallow gold mineralisation across an approximately 800-metre unconstrained strike length, while the main IP chargeability anomaly at depth remains untested by drilling.

For investors following junior gold explorers, the update matters because it combines two elements that often shape early-stage discovery interest: confirmed shallow gold over a growing footprint, and a deeper geophysical target that the company believes may represent the core of the mineralised system.

What Did the Latest Drilling Report at Sheepyard?

In the announcement, Talisman said the recent aircore program was designed to expand previous drilling and test the interpreted up-plunge position of a modelled IP chargeability anomaly. The results returned multiple broad gold intersections at shallow depth.

Key reported intersections from the current program include:

Hole ID Interval Width Au grade Comment
SYAC0085 42m to 51m 9m 0.94 g/t Au includes 6m at 1.28 g/t Au
SYAC0088 3m to 18m 15m 0.55 g/t Au includes 9m at 0.67 g/t Au
SYAC0088 30m to 45m 15m 0.46 g/t Au includes 3m at 0.97 g/t Au
SYAC0082 21m to 33m 12m 0.68 g/t Au includes 9m at 0.78 g/t Au, bottom of hole
SYAC0083 6m to 18m 12m 0.47 g/t Au includes 3m at 0.82 g/t Au
SYAC0059 18m to 27m 9m 0.57 g/t Au includes 3m at 1.02 g/t Au
SYAC0064 12m to 21m 9m 0.54 g/t Au includes 3m at 0.88 g/t Au
SYAC0067 30m to 39m 9m 0.38 g/t Au includes 3m at 0.54 g/t Au

These results add to previously reported aircore and reverse circulation drilling at Sheepyard, including:

Hole ID Width Au grade Comment
SYAC0043 15m 1.10 g/t Au from surface, includes 6m at 1.95 g/t Au
SYAC0041 9m 1.05 g/t Au from 30m
SYRC0003 42m 0.44 g/t Au includes 8m at 0.85 g/t Au
SYRC0004 24m 0.58 g/t Au includes 14m at 0.86 g/t Au and 4m at 1.29 g/t Au
SYRC0001 41m 0.29 g/t Au from 162m depth

Taken together, the reported dataset suggests that gold mineralisation is present across a broad shallow zone and remains open along strike and at depth. That is the central point investors will likely focus on.

"These results continue to build the case for Sheepyard as a potentially large-scale gold system. We're seeing consistent, shallow gold mineralisation across an unconstrained 800m of strike and, importantly, these intersections sit on the margins of an IP chargeability anomaly that has yet to be tested by drilling," said Todd Ross, Chief Executive Officer.

Why Is the IP Anomaly So Important?

A major feature of the update is not only the drilling that has been completed, but the target that has not yet been drilled. Talisman previously completed two lines of dipole-dipole induced polarisation (IP) surveying at Sheepyard, with a total survey length of 1,900 metres. According to the announcement, this work defined a strong north-west plunging IP chargeability anomaly.

An IP survey is a geophysical method used to detect rocks that can store an electrical charge. In gold exploration, that often points to sulphide minerals such as pyrite. These sulphides can be associated with gold mineralisation, particularly in orogenic gold systems.

Furthermore, several specific observations make this anomaly particularly significant at Sheepyard:

  • The reported shallow aircore gold intersections appear to sit on the margins of the anomaly rather than through its centre.
  • Two holes, SYAC0082 and SYAC0083, ended in mineralisation at the bottom of hole, suggesting the system continues deeper.
  • Talisman said the anomaly is interpreted to reflect disseminated pyrite linked with sheared, altered sediments and gold-bearing quartz veining.
  • The company also noted that hematite alteration in the shallow oxidised zone may reflect destruction of primary sulphides, potentially reducing the near-surface IP response.

In practical terms, the current drilling appears to have outlined the edges of a mineralised system, while the deeper geophysical core still awaits a direct reverse circulation test. That creates a clear near-term exploration catalyst.

What Is an IP Chargeability Anomaly?

For investors less familiar with geophysics, an IP chargeability anomaly is a zone underground that responds strongly during an induced polarisation survey. The process works as follows:

  1. An electrical current is passed into the ground.
  2. Some rock types, especially those containing sulphide minerals, hold that charge briefly.
  3. Instruments measure how strongly and how long the ground responds.
  4. A stronger response creates what geologists call a chargeability anomaly.

This does not automatically mean gold has been found. However, it does indicate that the rocks may contain minerals commonly associated with gold systems. Drilling is still needed to confirm what is actually present.

At Sheepyard, the significance lies in the combination of gold already intersected in drilling, a coherent geophysical target at depth, and geological features associated with orogenic gold. That combination can meaningfully improve confidence in where the next drill holes should be targeted.

Sheepyard Sits Inside a Larger Walkers Hill Gold Trend

The announcement also places Sheepyard within a larger regional context. The prospect forms the southern part of an approximately 5.5-kilometre-long north-west trending soil anomaly grading above 25 parts per billion gold.

Soil anomalies are surface geochemical patterns where elevated trace gold in soils may indicate a buried mineralised source. Once shallow bedrock gold is confirmed beneath them, however, they become considerably more meaningful as exploration guides.

At Walkers Hill, Talisman has completed:

  • 89 aircore holes for 3,883 metres
  • 5 reverse circulation holes
  • Surface geochemistry
  • Two lines of IP surveying

The broader Walkers Hill Gold Project covers a consolidated land package extending over approximately 90 kilometres of strike within the Lachlan Fold Belt of New South Wales. This geological province is known for hosting gold and base metal deposits of several styles.

What Geological Features Support the Orogenic Gold Interpretation?

According to the announcement, the geological features at Sheepyard are consistent with orogenic-style gold mineralisation, including:

  • Sheared, veined and brecciated quartz-pyrite alteration zones
  • Sediment-hosted mineralisation
  • A strong association with arsenic, antimony and tungsten
  • Possible structural controls from north-west and north-east/south-west orientations

For investors, deposit style influences how a project may be explored and what types of targets are likely to matter most. Orogenic gold systems can host broad lower-grade halos as well as more concentrated higher-grade shoots, although further drilling is required to determine whether Sheepyard develops in that way.

What Comes Next at Sheepyard?

Talisman said the next phase of work is being planned with two clear objectives. First, further aircore drilling is intended to extend the footprint of the shallow gold mineralised system and test more of the broader 5.5-kilometre anomaly. Second, reverse circulation drilling is planned to provide what the company described as a more definitive test of the IP chargeability anomaly at depth.

"Our next phase of drilling is designed to build on this momentum, with follow-up AC drilling aimed at extending the footprint of the mineralised system and deeper RC drilling planned to provide a definitive test of the IP anomaly at depth, which has the potential to represent the core of the mineralised system and host higher-grade gold mineralisation," Todd Ross said.

That planned RC drilling is likely to be the key item on the market's watchlist. The shallow system is already indicating scale potential, but the deeper anomaly is where the company believes stronger sulphide-hosted mineralisation may sit if the geological interpretation is correct.

East Peak Hill Update Narrows the Focus

The ASX update also included a brief report on the East Peak Hill Project, another 100%-owned Talisman project in New South Wales. According to the announcement, East Peak Hill is located in the Junee-Narromine Belt, around 10 kilometres south of the Tomingley Gold Mine and 5 kilometres east of the Peak Hill Gold Mine, both operated by Alkane Resources.

A recent 15-hole, 1,103-metre aircore program tested targets outside the project's main mineralised trend. This phase returned no significant intersections across holes EPAC0096 to EPAC0110. However, while that result removed support for the peripheral targets tested, Talisman confirmed that the central trend remains the focus of ongoing work.

The company had previously identified an anomalous gold trend over an interpreted approximately 5-kilometre strike length, and infill aircore drilling is now being planned along that corridor. For investors, the East Peak Hill result is relevant because it refines exploration priorities rather than broadening them — a development that can improve targeting efficiency even when a particular drill phase does not return significant results.

Why Sheepyard May Remain on Investor Radar

The investment case in the announcement rests on a combination of scale indicators and an untested deeper target rather than on any resource estimate or economic study. Key points from the current exploration picture include:

Factor Detail
Mineralised strike defined Approximately 800m, still unconstrained
Broader soil anomaly Approximately 5.5km above 25ppb Au
Drilling completed at Sheepyard 89 AC holes for 3,883m and 5 RC holes
Main IP target Yet to be drill tested
Gold intersections Multiple shallow broad intercepts from surface to moderate depth
Mineralisation style Orogenic gold, according to the company
Project ownership 100% Talisman Mining
Regional project scale Approximately 90km strike at Walkers Hill

The current evidence does not confirm the grade, continuity, or overall size of a future deposit. What it does indicate, according to the company, is a growing gold system with geological and geophysical features that justify further drilling.

For the market, the near-term question is straightforward: can reverse circulation drilling into the main IP anomaly demonstrate that the shallow mineralisation links to a stronger sulphide-rich zone at depth? If so, Sheepyard may attract increased attention as one of Talisman's priority gold targets.

Final Take

According to Talisman's ASX announcement, Sheepyard is progressing from early reconnaissance into a more defined gold exploration target. The latest 1,657-metre aircore program has added more broad shallow gold intersections, extended confidence in an approximately 800-metre strike length, and reinforced the significance of a large undrilled IP chargeability anomaly below.

That leaves the project with a clear next step and a clear catalyst. Further aircore drilling may continue to widen the surface footprint, but the more material test is expected to come from planned reverse circulation drilling into the deeper anomaly that, in management's view, may represent the core of the mineralised system at Walkers Hill.
